The Quickest in the Sea
Fluency Quick Check — student copy · Suffixes — -er and -est
Name: ________________ Date: __________
This is a recreation of the age-old tale of the Tortoise and the Hare, except in this story it is a fish and a turtle. Fish is bragging to Turtle that he is the best at everything, and Turtle does not agree. Turtle creates a plan to tire Fish and then beat him in a race.
Has anyone ever told you the story about the quickest turtle in the sea? No? Well, this will be the tallest tale you have ever been told.
This is an older tale that has been told many times. All who know this story think that it is the best!
It all started on the coldest Monday in March. Fish was telling Turtle that he was the smartest in the sea. Turtle did not agree because he knew he was the smartest in the sea.
Then, Fish told Turtle he could swim lower in the water than Turtle could. Again, Turtle did not agree because Turtle knew he could sit on the bottom of the sea.
Next, Fish told Turtle that he was the highest jumping fish out of all the fish in the water. Turtle knew this was not true because he had seen a fish jump higher just last week.
