Warm Up Our Ears

Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

Blend it (teacher says sounds → you say word)

/s/ · /n/ · /ō/snow
/s/ · /o͞o/ · /t/suit
/s/ · /n/ · /ō/ · /s/ · /o͞o/ · /t/snowsuit

Break it (I say word → you say sounds)

Step 5

New Concept

Today we review all the vowel teams we've learned so far and practice reading and spelling big words with them.

Highlighted words are the ones to show and practice reading — tap one to hear it.

We have been learning about vowel teams. When we read and spell words with vowel teams we need to be flexible because the vowel sounds we hear can be spelled different ways and the vowel teams we see can represent different sounds.

Breaking apart big words

When we read and spell big words with vowel teams, we can break them into syllables to help us decode. For example: replay (re-play), raincoat (rain-coat), and moonlight (moon-light).

How our mouth moves

Review articulatory gestures for vowels, as needed.

Sound wall

Refer to vowel teams on sound wall, as needed.
