Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

Today we review all the vowel teams we have learned so far for /ā/, /ē/, /ō/, and /ī/.

Vowel teams are two or more letters that work together to make one vowel sound. The long A sound /ā/ can be spelled AI or AY. AI can come in the middle of a word like in bait and mail or at the beginning of a word like in aim and aid. AY always comes at the end of a word like in may and say. The long E sound /ē/ can be spelled EE, EA, or EY. EE comes in the middle of a word like in need and feet or at the end of a word like in see and tree. EA comes in the middle of a word like in mean and team, at the beginning of a word like in eat and each, or at the end of a word like in tea and flea. EY only comes at the end of a two-syllable word like in kidney and turkey. The long O sound /ō/ can be spelled OA, OW, or OE. OA can come in the middle of a word like in boat and road or at the beginning of a word like in oat and oak. OW is usually at the end of a word like in show and grow. It can also come in the middle of a word like in bowl and flown. OE comes at the end of a word like in toe. The long I sound /ī/ can be spelled IE or IGH. IE comes at the end of a word like in pie and tie. IGH is usually in the middle of a word like in light and might. It can also come at the end of a word like in high and sigh.
ai, ay /ā/
AI usually comes in the middle of a word (bait, mail); AY always comes at the end of a word (may, say).
ee, ea, ey /ē/
EE and EA can come at the beginning, middle, or end of a word; EY only comes at the end of a two-syllable word (kidney, turkey).
oa, ow, oe /ō/
OA comes at the beginning or middle of a word (oat, boat); OW usually comes at the end or middle (show, bowl); OE comes at the end (toe).
ie, igh /ī/
IE comes at the end of a word (pie, tie); IGH usually comes in the middle, and sometimes at the end (light, high).

Review articulatory gestures, as needed. Refer to vowel teams /ā/ ai, ay; /ē/ ee, ea, ey; /ō/ oa, ow, oe; /ī/ ie, igh.
