The graphemes IE and IGH spell /ī/
IE spells /ī/ at the end of a syllable or word. IGH spells /ī/ in the middle or end of a syllable or word.

Today we learn two new ways to spell the long I sound: IE and IGH.

The long I sound is /ī/ as in cream. Today we will learn new ways to spell the long I sound. We have already learned that I spells /ī/ in silent E words like kite. We have also learned that I spells /ī/ in open syllables like /tī/ in tiger. We have also learned that Y can spell /ī/ at the end of one-syllable words like fly. Vowel teams are two or more letters that work together to make one vowel sound.

The vowel team IE can spell /ī/. IE comes at the end of a word like in pie and tie.
igh /ī/
The vowel team IGH spells /ī/. IGH usually comes in the middle of a word like in light and might. IGH also comes at the end of a word like in high and sigh.
How our mouth moves
