The graphemes OA, OW, and OE spell /ō/
OA spells /ō/ at the beginning or middle of a syllable or word. OW spells /ō/ in the middle or end of a syllable or word. OE spells /ō/ at the end of a syllable or word. OW sometimes spells /ow/ (Lesson 96).

Today we learn three new ways to spell the long O sound: OA, OW, and OE.

The long O sound is /ō/ as in . Today we will learn new ways to spell the long O sound. We have already learned that O spells /ō/ in silent E words like bone. We have also learned that O spells /ō/ in open syllables like /cō/ in cozy. Vowel teams are two or more letters that work together to make one vowel sound.
oa /ō/
The vowel team OA spells /ō/. OA usually comes in the middle of a word like in boat and road. OA also comes at the beginning of a word like in oat and oak.
ow /ō/
The vowel team OW also spells /ō/. OW usually comes at the end of a word, like in show and grow. OW can also come in the middle of a word like in bowl and flown.
oe /ō/
The vowel team OE also spells /ō/. OE comes at the end of a word like in toe.
