Reading and spelling words with -ILD, -OLD, -IND, -OLT, and -OST endings
The high frequency word 'don't' follows the long VCC pattern. The concept of a contraction should be addressed separately when appropriate.

Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.
Blend it (teacher says sounds → you say word)
Break it (I say word → you say sounds)

Today we learn tricky word endings where the vowel says its long sound before two consonants.

There are some tricky word endings that change the sound of the vowel in words. ILD spells /īld/ with a long I sound like in the word . IND often spells /īnd/ with a long I sound like in the word . OLD spells /ōld/ with a long O sound like in the word . OLT spells /ōlt/ with a long O sound like in the word . OST often spells /ōst/ with a long O sound like in the word .
Long VCC endings
ILD, IND, OLD, OLT, and OST are word endings where the vowel makes its long sound even though it is followed by two consonants.
How our mouth moves
Remember, like all vowels, /ī/ and /ō/ are continuous sounds that can be stretched out (use continuous hand motion). Be sure your voice is on for these sounds. Watch me /ī/. You try /ī/. Watch me /ō/. You try /ō/.
