Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

Today we review new ways to spell familiar sounds: TCH for /ch/ and DGE for /j/.

We have learned that the consonant digraph CH spells /ch/ like at the beginning of the word . CH can come at the beginning of a word, such as and . CH can also come at the end of a word, as in words such and rich. The grapheme TCH is another way to spell /ch/. TCH only comes at the end of a word immediately after a short vowel sound, as in and . We have also learned that the consonant J spells /j/ like in the word . The consonant G also spells /j/ when it is followed by a silent e, such as the word . The grapheme DGE is another way to spell /j/. DGE only comes at the end of a word immediately after a short vowel sound, as in words dodge and bridge.

TCH is a trigraph spelling /ch/ right after a short vowel, as in and .
DGE review
DGE is a trigraph spelling /j/ right after a short vowel, as in and .
How our mouth moves
/ch/: a stop sound that can't be stretched out, voice off. Watch me /ch/. You try /ch/. /j/: a stop sound that can't be stretched out, voice on. Watch me /j/. You try /j/. Be sure students do not add a schwa sound after /j/.
