The grapheme F spells /f/

At this point, F is being introduced only as initial /f/. The high frequency word 'if' is introduced in Lesson 8. The /f/ sound spelled FF (e.g., puff) is introduced in Lesson 42.

Warm Up Our Ears

Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

F spells /f/ like at the beginning of fish. Right now we look for F at the beginning of words like fun and fit.

How our mouth moves

To make the /f/ sound, bite your bottom lip like this…/fff/. Hold your lip there and blow. The /f/ sound is a continuous sound that can be stretched out (use continuous hand motion). Be sure your voice is off. Watch me /fff/. You try /fff/. Students may need to use a finger to keep their lip in the right place.
