Words with the VCe pattern and exceptions
-VE is a common pattern for /v/ as the last sound in a word because words in English do not end with the letter V. Not all words with -VE have a long vowel sound (e.g., carve, prove). -SE is a common pattern for /s/ as the last sound in a word to differentiate the /s/ sound from the -S suffix. Not all words with -SE have a long vowel sound (e.g., house, course).

Today we review words with silent E and learn about two exceptions to the silent E pattern: words ending in -VE and the scribal O.

We have been learning about words with the silent E pattern. Silent E at the end of a word makes the first vowel make a long sound, or say its name, like in the words , , note. When the letter C is followed by a silent E, it spells /s/ like in the words and . When the letter G is followed by a silent E, it spells /j/ like in the words and . There are two exceptions to the silent E pattern in words, or two times this rule gets broken.
Exception 1: -VE
Some words that end with VE have vowels that make the short sound, not the long sound, such as the words , , have. This happens because in English, words are not allowed to end with the letter V. When a word with a short vowel sound ends with V, we add the silent E but the silent E does not change the vowel sound.
Exception 2: Scribal O
The next exception to the silent E pattern is called the scribal O. In some silent E words, there is an O that sounds like a short U, such as the words and . This is called the scribal O because it is believed that a long time ago, these words were spelled with U, but the scribes, or the people whose job it was to write all the words , a hard time reading the U next to letters that looked similar, so in these words the scribes changed U to O to make it easier to read. The words , , , , some all have the scribal O.
