The grapheme G spells /j/ when followed by E
This is students' initial introduction to the 'soft' sound for G. -GE is a common pattern for /j/ as the last sound in a word because words in English do not end with the letter J. Not all words with -GE follow the VCe pattern (e.g., fringe, change).

Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

Today we learn that G can spell /j/ when it is followed by a silent E, like in the word cage.

The /j/ sound is a stop sound that can't be stretched out. Be sure your voice is on. Watch me /j/. You try /j/. Be sure students do not add a schwa sound (i.e., /j/ not /juh/).
