The grapheme P spells /p/
The phoneme /p/ is an unvoiced stop sound. When modeling, be careful not to add a schwa or short /ŭ/ at the end (i.e., /p/, not /puh/).

Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

P spells /p/ like at the beginning of pig. Look for P at the beginning of words like pot and pig, and at the end of words like hop and nap.
How our mouth moves
To make the /p/ sound, put your lips together and make your lips pop like this…(model). Be sure to turn your voice off. It's just a quiet pop of air. Can you feel the air with your hand? The /p/ sound is a stop sound that can't be stretched out (use stop hand motion). Watch me /p/. You try /p/. Be sure students do not add a schwa sound.
