Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.
Blend it (teacher says sounds → you say word)
Break it (I say word → you say sounds)

Today we review reading and spelling words with all of the VCe/silent E patterns we know.

Today we will review long vowel sounds in words with silent E. Remember, vowels make their long sound, or say their name, when there is a silent E at the end of a word.
a_e /ā/
The long sound for A is /ā/ as in . A makes its long sound in words with silent E, like make and fame.
i_e /ī/
The long sound for I is /ī/ as in cream.
o_e /ō/
The long sound for O is /ō/ as in . O makes its long sound in words with silent E, like joke and stone.
e_e /ē/
The long sound for E is /ē/ as in . E makes its long sound in words with silent E, like eve and theme. In words with the E_E pattern, the first E says its name and the last E is silent.
u_e /ū/, /yōō/
There are two long sounds for U: /ū/ as in and /yōō/ as in . U makes its long sounds in words with silent E, like flute and cube. When we see words with the U_E pattern, we can be flexible and try both sounds for long U to see which one sounds right.
Notice the silent E
It is important to notice when there is a silent E at the end of the word it will tell us to say the first vowel's long sound. Model adding and removing the silent E with the following word pairs to emphasize the change in vowel sound: cap - cape; Tim - time; hop - hope; pet - Pete; cub - cube; tub - tube.
