Reviewing the VCe/E_E pattern for a_e, i_e, o_e, and introducing e_e /ē/
The long /ē/ is the only long vowel sound that is never produced as a diphthong. The mouth position does not change as you hold it out.

Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

Today we will review long vowel sounds in words with silent E. Remember, vowels make their long sound, or say their name, when there is a silent E at the end of a word. You can use the terms "magic E" or "bossy E" to describe the silent E.
a_e /ā/
The long sound for A is /ā/ as in . A makes its long sound in words with silent E, like make and fame.
i_e /ī/
The long sound for I is /ī/ as in cream. I makes its long sound in words with silent E, like bike and mine.
o_e /ō/
The long sound for O is /ō/ as in . O makes its long sound in words with silent E, like joke and stone.
e_e /ē/
The long sound for E is /ē/ as in . Silent E also makes the vowel E say its name, like in eve and theme. In words with the E_E pattern, the first E says its name and the last E is silent.
How our mouth moves
Display the word . This word is pet, /p/ /ĕ/ /t/. The E is making a short sound: /ĕ/. Watch what happens when I add silent E. (Display the word .) Pet becomes Pete, a person's name, /p/ /ē/ /t/. The silent E at the end made the first E say its name.
