Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

Today we review reading words with CK, SH, TH, CH, WH, PH, NG, and NK.

Today we will review reading words with CK, SH, TH, CH, WH, PH, NG, and NK. ck /k/: When C and K are together at the end of a word, they spell /k/ like at the end of the word . CK can only come at the end of a word. sh /sh/: The consonant digraph SH spells the /sh/ sound, like at the beginning of the word . SH can come at the beginning or end of a word. th /th/, /th/: The consonant digraph TH spells two sounds. The unvoiced TH spells /th/ like at the beginning of the word . The unvoiced /th/ can come at the beginning or end of a word. The voiced TH spells /th/ like at the beginning of the word . Voiced /th/ can only come at the beginning of a word. ch /ch/: The consonant digraph CH spells /ch/ like at the beginning of the word . CH can come at the beginning or end of a word. wh /w/: The consonant digraph WH spells /w/ like at the beginning of the word . WH can only come at the beginning of a word. ph /f/: The consonant digraph PH spells /f/ like at the beginning of the word . PH can come at the beginning or end of a word. ng /ŋ/: The sound /ŋ/ is usually represented by the letters NG, like at the end of the word . The letters NG for the sound only come at the end of a word. nk /ŋ/: The sound /ŋ/ can also be represented by the letter N, when it is combined with a K, like at the end of the word . The letters NK for the sound /ŋk/ only come at the end of a word.
Digraphs + r
SH is followed by R at the beginning of words like shrimp and shrub. TH is followed by R at the beginning of words like three and thrill. These sounds can be tricky to blend together.
