Practice blending and segmenting VC and CVC words
The manipulative letter tray can be used for extra practice with letter recognition, as needed. If having the full alphabet on the tray is overwhelming, reduce the number of letters displayed at one time.

Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.
Blend it (teacher says sounds → you say word)
Break it (I say word → you say sounds)

Today we play word work — building and reading little words like at, mat, and sat.

We have been working so hard learning new letters and reading and spelling new words! Today we are going to learn how to play a new game called word work. Word work helps us practice the letters and sounds we learn so we can become strong readers and spellers.
Getting our trays ready
We use our magnetic letter trays to do word work. To do word work we need to listen very carefully so we can hear what words we are making or what letters we are moving. I will tell you a letter you need to find. When I tell you what letter you need, look for it on your tray. Once you find it, pick it up and put it at the bottom of your tray close to you. Our letters are in alphabetical order and stay on our tray — we move one letter at a time.
Building at → mat → sat → at
Watch me first. I find the letter A and put it at the bottom of my tray. What sound is that? Right, /ă/. Now I find the letter T and put it next to the letter A. Touch each letter as you say the sound, then sweep your finger under the letters and blend: /aaat/, at. Add M in front to make mat. Put M back and add S to make sat. Take S away and we have at again.
