e /ĕ/ Review
Review the grapheme E spelling /ĕ/, including in words with consonant clusters
There are two options for short E review: (1) a review of the short E sound in CVC words and (2) a review of the short E sound in words with consonant clusters. Select whichever lesson or combination of lessons meets the needs of your students. Some students may pronounce some words with short /ĕ/ as short /ĭ/ (e.g., pĕn/pin; gĕt/git). Listen for this and, if it occurs, explain that there are different pronunciations based on where people live. Call attention to the differences in the articulatory gestures to help students notice the distinctions.

Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

This is the letter E. E is a vowel. You know the name of this letter already, E. This is the long vowel sound. Today we are going to read words with the short vowel sound. The short vowel E spells /ĕ/ like in the beginning of the word . The letter E can come in the middle of a word, such as the words and . The letter E can also come at the beginning of a word, such as the words and . To read longer words with the short vowel /ĕ/, we still say each sound.

Different pronunciations
Some students may pronounce words with short /ĕ/ as short /ĭ/ (e.g., pĕn/pin; gĕt/git). This can be a difference based on where people live.
How our mouth moves
To make the short E /ĕ/ sound, open your mouth just a little, stretch the corners of your mouth a little, and drop your chin like this…(model). Be sure your voice is on. Like all vowels, /ĕ/ is a continuous sound that can be stretched out (make a continuous hand motion). Watch me /ĕ/. You try /ĕ/.
