The grapheme J spells /j/
The letter J only appears at the beginning of words or syllables. The /j/ sound at the end of a word or syllable is typically spelled GE as in cage (Lesson 61) or DGE as in hedge (Lesson 70).

Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

Introduce j: Begin at the middle line. Start at the top. Straight line down below the line. Curve up (to the left). Hop to the top. Make a dot.
How our mouth moves
To make the /j/ sound, put your teeth together and round your lips like this... (model). Pull your tongue back toward the back of your mouth with the tip touching behind your teeth. Be sure your voice is on. The /j/ sound is a stop sound that can't be stretched out (use stop hand motion). Watch me /j/. You try /j/. Be sure students do not add a schwa sound (i.e., /j/ not /juh/).
