The grapheme L spells /l/ (part 2 of 2)
Remember, when reading and spelling words with consonant clusters, students should be able to hear and produce each sound. Students do not need to memorize the consonants with which L can blend.

Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.
Blend it (teacher says sounds → you say word)

Today we practice reading and spelling words where L blends with another consonant, like in flag and slug.

We learned that the letter L spells /l/. When L comes at the end of word after an A, it spells AL, such as the words and . Sometimes L is next to another consonant like in the words and . When we see L next to a consonant, we say each sound and then blend them together. Watch me: /p/ /l/ /ŏ/ /p/, plop; /k/ /l/ /ŭ/ /b/, club.

How our mouth moves
Remember to make the /l/ sound, move your tongue right behind your top, front teeth like this and turn your voice on...(model). The /l/ sound is a continuous sound that can be stretched out (use continuous hand motion). Watch me /l/. You try /lll/. Be sure students do not add a schwa sound before or after the /l/ sound (i.e., /l/ not /ull/ or /luh/).
