r /r/ Part 2
The grapheme R spells /r/ (part 2 of 2)
The /r/ sound is difficult for many students to produce. Spend additional time practicing the /r/ sound as needed. Words with the TR cluster often sound like /ch/+/r/ and words with the DR cluster often sound like /j/+/r/. This is a very common and perfectly correct pronunciation. Rather than attempt to change a child's pronunciation, help them understand that when they hear /ch/+/r/, it's spelled TR, and when they hear /j/+/r/, it's spelled DR. When reading and spelling words with consonant clusters, students should be able to hear and produce each sound. Students do not need to memorize the consonants with which R can blend.
