k /k/
The grapheme K spells /k/
K spells /k/ when followed by E, I, or Y and C spells /k/ when followed by A, O, or U (e.g., kit, cat). The -CK pattern spells /k/ at the end of a word immediately after a short vowel sound (Lesson 44). This lesson is students' first introduction to words with consonant clusters. It is important for students to recognize the individual sounds in consonant clusters. It is not necessary for students to memorize which consonant pairs are commonly blended together.

Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

Today we learn the letter K and the sound /k/ like in kite.

We learned the letter C spells /k/ like at the beginning of cat. Today we are going to learn another letter that makes the same /k/ sound. This is the letter K. K is a consonant. K spells /k/ like in the beginning of the word . The letter K can come at the beginning of a word, such as the words and . The letters S and K are sometimes next to each other in words. These two letters still spell their own sounds, /s/ /k/, like in the beginning of skip and the end of mask. To read these words, we still say each sound. Watch me, /s/ /k/ /i/ /p/, skip... /m/ /ă/ /s/ /k/, mask.

Review K: Start at the top. Straight line down. Hop back to the top and over (to the right). Slant line down to the middle (right to left). Slant line down to the bottom (left to right).

How our mouth moves
Remember, to make the /k/ sound, you have to put the back of your tongue to the very back of your mouth like this... (model). Your voice is off for this sound. The /k/ sound is a stop sound that can't be stretched out (use stop hand motion). Watch me /k/. You try /k/. Be sure students do not add a schwa sound (i.e., /k/ not /kuh/).
