The grapheme G spells /g/
At this point, G is being introduced only as the 'hard' sound /g/. G can also represent /j/ (e.g., gem), which is addressed in a later lesson.

Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

Review G: Start at the top. Curve around like you are making a C. Curve in toward the middle and straight down. Small line to the left.

Introduce g: Begin at the midline. Curve around like you are making a small o. Straight line down below the bottom line and curve into a hook to the left.
How our mouth moves
To make the /g/ sound, put the back of your tongue up against the roof of your mouth and pop it down with your voice on like this…(model). The /g/ sound is a stop sound that can't be stretched out (use stop hand motion). Watch me /g/. You try /g/. Be sure students do not add a schwa sound.
