The grapheme U spells /ŭ/
At this point, U is being introduced only as short /ŭ/. U can also represent other sounds, such as long /ū/ in U_E words (Lesson 58) or /oo/ as in 'put' or 'push' (Lesson 89).

How our mouth moves
To make the short u /ŭ/ sound, open your mouth just a little and drop your chin like this...(model). Be sure your voice is on. Like all vowels, /ŭ/ is a continuous sound that can be stretched out (use continuous hand motion). Watch me /ŭ/. You try /ŭ/.
