The grapheme C spells /k/
At this point, C is being introduced only as initial /k/. The /k/ sound can also be spelled K (Lesson 22) or -CK (Lesson 44). C can also represent the /s/ sound when followed by E (Lesson 60), I, or Y (Lesson 117).

Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

Review C: Start at the top. Curve around this way (counterclockwise). Stop at the bottom.

Introduce c: Begin at the middle line. Start at the top. Curve half way around (counterclockwise). Stop at the bottom.
How our mouth moves
To make the /k/ sound, you have to put the back of your tongue to the very back of your mouth like this...(model). Your voice is off for this sound. The /k/ sound is a stop sound that can't be stretched out (use stop hand motion). Watch me /k/. You try /k/. Be sure students do not add a schwa sound (i.e., /k/ not /kuh/).
