The grapheme D spells /d/
The phoneme /d/ is a voiced stop sound. When modeling, be careful not to add a schwa or short /ŭ/ at the end (i.e., /d/ not /duh/).

Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

How our mouth moves
To make the /d/ sound, tap your tongue right behind your top, front teeth like this...(model). Keep your voice on when you make the /d/ sound. The /d/ sound is a stop sound that can't be stretched out (use stop hand motion). Watch me /d/. You try /d/. Be sure students do not add a schwa sound (i.e., /d/ not /duh/).
