The focus of this lesson is on the meaning of the suffixes and their role in changing the part of speech. In Lesson 100, students learned about the suffix -ER when used with adjectives to mean 'more than' (e.g., stronger). In this lesson, -ER is used to change verbs to nouns (e.g., teach - teacher). The concepts of nouns and verbs should be addressed separately, as needed.

Remember, a morpheme is a word part that changes a word's meaning. A suffix is a morpheme that comes at the end of a word. Today we will learn about three new suffixes: -ER, -OR, and -IST. We already know that when we add the suffix -ER to adjectives, it means more than, like in the word . When we add the suffix -ER to verbs, or action words, it makes the verb become a noun meaning one that does. Teach is a verb. Adding -ER to teach makes teacher. A teacher is a person who teaches. Print is a verb. Adding -ER makes printer. A printer is something that prints. -OR and -IST are also used to make verbs into nouns. -OR is pronounced /er/ as in . -IST is pronounced /ist/ as in . A sailor is someone who sails. A cartoonist is someone who draws cartoons.
