New Concept
Today we review the prefixes and suffixes we've learned so far.
Highlighted words are the ones to show and practice reading — tap one to hear it.
Morphemes are word parts that change a word's meaning. Suffixes and prefixes are types of morphemes. Let's review the suffixes and prefixes we have learned so far. Suffixes: Suffixes are morphemes that come at the end of a word. -ED and -ING change the tense of a verb (e.g., started, starting); -S/-ES can make nouns plural or change the tense of verbs (e.g., cats, runs); -ER means more than and -EST means the most, these suffixes help us make comparisons (e.g., fast, faster, fastest); -LY makes words adjectives or adverbs which are describing words (e.g., quickly); -LESS means without (e.g., helpless); -FUL means full of (e.g., hopeful). Prefixes: Prefixes are morphemes that come at the beginning of a word. UN- means not or opposite (e.g., untie, unzip); PRE- means before (e.g., preview); RE- means again or go back (e.g., replay, return); DIS- means not or apart (e.g., dislike, disconnect).
Affixes review
As you read and spell words, focus on how the morphemes impact the meaning of the words.
