pre-, re-
The prefix PRE- means before; the prefix RE- means again or back
Students may notice PRE and RE in words where they do not function as prefixes (e.g., press, real). Remember the letters PRE and RE only form prefixes when they come at the beginning of a word and change the meaning of the word.

Warm Up Our Ears
Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

We have been learning that a morpheme is a word part that changes a word's meaning. A prefix is a morpheme that comes at the beginning of a word. We know the prefix UN-. Today we will learn two new prefixes: PRE- and RE-. The prefix PRE- is pronounced /prē/ with a long E like in the word . PRE- means before. Preview means watch before. We watch previews of movies before watching the whole movie. Preheat means heat before. I can preheat the oven before I bake. The prefix RE- is pronounced /rē/ with a long E like in the word . RE- means again or back. Redo means do again. I can redo my hair if I don't like how it looks the first time. Return means give back or go back. We return or go back to school every weekday and we can return or give back books to the library.

The prefix PRE- means before, as in (watch before) and preheat (heat before).
re-
The prefix RE- means again or back, as in (do again) and return (give back).
