Lesson 103
un-
The prefix UN- means not or opposite
Students may notice UN in words where it does not function as a prefix (e.g., uncle, run). Remember the letters UN only form a prefix when they come at the beginning of a word and change the meaning of the word to not or opposite. Reinforce understanding of prefixes by pointing out examples and non-examples in text and by using the meaning of prefixes to define new words.

Blend it (teacher says sounds → you say word)
Break it (I say word → you say sounds)
Flashcard Drills
Full-screen cards for the class. Tap a card to check the answer, or press Hear the words to hear the example words read aloud.
Blending Drill
Change one part at a time and read the new word.

Highlighted words are the ones to show and practice reading — tap one to hear it.
We have learned that morphemes are word parts that change the meaning of a word. Suffixes are morphemes that are added to the end of a word. Morphemes added to the beginning of a word are called prefixes. Today we will learn a new prefix: UN-. The prefix UN- is pronounced /ŭn/ like in the word . UN- means not or opposite. UN- means not in words like unhappy or unkind. Unhappy means not happy or not in a good mood. Unkind means not kind or not nice. UN- means opposite in words like unzip and uncover. Zip means close. I can zip my backpack closed. Unzip means the opposite, I can unzip my backpack open. Cover means put something over to hide or protect. I can cover my eyes with my hands if I do not want to see something. Uncover means the opposite, I can uncover my eyes so I can see.
