Lesson 10

CVC Practice

Practice reading and spelling CVC words

Syllables can be segmented into their body and coda. The body consists of the vowel and any consonants before it, and the coda is everything after the vowel: ca-t, pi-n. Body-coda blending can be a helpful scaffold for students struggling with blending initial stop phonemes.

Step 1

Warm Up Our Ears

Say the sounds; students blend them into a word. Then say a word; students break it apart.

Blend it (teacher says sounds → you say word)

/f/ · /ĭ/ · /t/fit
/m/ · /ă/ · /t/mat
/n/ · /ă/ · /p/nap
/t/ · /ĭ/ · /n/tin

Break it (I say word → you say sounds)

Step 5

New Concept

Today we practice reading and spelling little words with all the sounds we know.

Highlighted words are the ones to show and practice reading — tap one to hear it.

We have been learning new letters and sounds! Today we will practice reading and spelling words using the letters and sounds we know. When we read words, we look at every letter, say each sound, then blend the sounds together to read the word. When we spell words, first we say the whole word, next we say each sound we hear in the word, and then we write a letter for each sound.

Read it

Look at every letter, say each sound, then blend the sounds together to read the word.

Spell it

Say the whole word, say each sound you hear, then write a letter for each sound.
